Taj Launches ‘Jewel of the Lake’ Book on Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur
Celebrating the history of one of India’s most recognized palace hotels, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has unveiled Jewel of the Lake: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, a book that documents the heritage, architecture, and stories of the Hotel. The property sits on Lake Pichola and has long been associated with the city’s royal and cultural history.
Developed under the creative direction of Rymn Massand, the book presents narratives and visual documentation that trace the palace’s evolution over nearly three centuries. Through historical accounts, archival material and photographs, the publication highlights the people, craftsmanship and traditions connected to the palace.
Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, said the palace holds a significant place in the company’s history.
“Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur holds a very special place in our hearts. It was the first palace through which we expanded our hospitality journey beyond The Taj Mahal Palace, marking the beginning of a wider legacy,” Chhatwal said.
Originally built in 1746 as the summer residence of Maharana Jagat Singh II of the House of Mewar, the palace was initially known as Jagniwas. Over time, it transitioned from a royal retreat into a hotel while retaining elements of Mewar’s architectural style and cultural traditions.
Book Explores Heritage of the Palace

Jewel of the Lake combines historical narratives, personal accounts and imagery to explore the palace’s journey across different periods. The book examines the history of the Mewar dynasty, architectural elements of the marble structure and the stories associated with the property.

The publication also includes reflections from Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, who describes the palace as both a historic family residence and a site that continues to host visitors from around the world.
Taj Lake Palace recently received Three Michelin Keys, an international recognition for hospitality properties. The book Jewel of the Lake: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur is available at the hotel for guests during their stay.
