IndiGo Pauses Manchester Operations Amid Ongoing Operational Pressures

IndiGo has announced the temporary suspension of its flights to and from Manchester, effective 31 August 2026, citing operational and cost-related challenges linked to ongoing international airspace restrictions.

The airline said extended flight durations due to airspace constraints, combined with higher operating costs, have made the route commercially unsustainable under current conditions.

As part of the move, IndiGo plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had acquired on a damp lease from Norse Atlantic Airways. The airline confirmed that all other long-haul services will continue to operate as scheduled.

IndiGo entered into an agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025 to lease six Boeing 787-9 aircraft as part of its strategy to expand its international footprint and establish services in Europe ahead of the arrival of its own Airbus A350 fleet.

However, the airline said a combination of geopolitical developments in the Middle East, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, airspace restrictions and foreign exchange volatility has significantly increased operating costs beyond initial projections.

Commenting on the decision, Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President – Network Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, said the airline had introduced the aircraft to accelerate connectivity to long-haul destinations, including Manchester, and had received a positive response from travellers.

He noted that longer flight times and higher operating costs had made the temporary suspension necessary. Dasgupta added that IndiGo remains committed to its long-haul expansion plans and intends to resume services to Manchester when conditions become more favourable. The airline is also exploring options to continue its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways.

IndiGo said affected passengers will be informed in advance and offered available alternatives, including rebooking options or refunds, where applicable.

The temporary suspension comes as airlines worldwide continue to navigate operational challenges arising from geopolitical tensions, fuel price fluctuations and evolving airspace restrictions.
