Sunway Hotels & Resorts Partners with Saxon Renewables to Introduce Voluntary Guest Carbon Offset Programme

Sunway Hotels & Resorts, the Malaysian-owned hospitality group with 11 hotels across Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam, has partnered with Saxon Renewables, Asia’s trusted climate solutions provider, to launch a Voluntary Guest Carbon Offset Programme that enables travellers to support environmental initiatives during their stay.

Guests can choose to contribute voluntarily when booking their room online or at check-in. Their contributions will support certified carbon projects supplied by Saxon Renewables. These projects follow internationally recognised standards, including Verra and Gold Standard, ensuring that contributions lead to independently verified emission reductions.

Alex Castaldi, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Hospitality Group, said: “Sustainability has long been part of Sunway’s approach. Through this collaboration with Saxon Renewables, we are extending that effort to our guests and offering them an opportunity to participate in climate action.”

Reik Ong, Founder and Managing Director of Saxon Renewables, noted: “We look forward to working with Sunway Hotels & Resorts to make climate action more accessible for guests. By linking the hospitality sector to certified carbon projects, we help turn sustainability commitments into verified outcomes that guests can support.”

Sustainability in Action at Sunway Hotels & Resorts

Sunway Hotels & Resorts is part of a group of hospitality brands offering guests a voluntary way to address the carbon impact of their stay. This initiative supports Sunway’s broader commitment to responsible travel and environmentally conscious operations.

Across its portfolio, the Group has adopted energy-efficiency measures, including LED lighting, motion-sensor controls, and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS). Water conservation is encouraged through low-flow fixtures and linen-reuse programmes, while waste reduction efforts include recycling, food waste segregation, and gradual removal of single-use plastics.

The new carbon offset programme adds a simple way for guests to contribute to certified climate projects with measurable environmental benefits.

Supporting Eco-conscious Travellers

The initiative reflects an evolving traveller mindset. According to the Booking.com Sustainable Travel Report 2024, 75% of travellers aim to make more sustainable choices, 43% experience guilt when they do not, and 32% choose eco-friendly options because it aligns with their values. By integrating a transparent and credible offset option, Sunway is responding to these expectations.

Sunway plans to introduce the programme across its hotels by Q1 2026, with an initial target of offsetting up to 500 tonnes of carbon emissions in the first year through certified carbon credits. Each tonne retired represents verified environmental impact supported by guest participation.

As Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, this partnership highlights the hospitality sector’s role in responsible travel and growing guest interest in environmental awareness.

A Collaborative Step Toward Responsible Travel

The partnership between Sunway Hotels & Resorts and Saxon Renewables marks a meaningful step for Malaysia’s hospitality landscape. It demonstrates how coordinated efforts between hospitality and environmental organisations can contribute to low-carbon goals.

By inviting guests to support certified carbon projects, Sunway aims to encourage travellers to view sustainability not only as a corporate initiative but as a shared responsibility for a more resilient future.
