Hyatt Opens Thompson Shanghai Expo, Introducing the Thompson Brand to Asia
Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced the opening of Thompson Shanghai Expo, marking the debut of the Thompson Hotels brand in Asia Pacific. Located in Shanghai’s World Expo district, a revitalized hub for business, culture, and events, the hotel offers an experience that reflects the city’s creative and cosmopolitan character.
A Cultural Landmark in a Dynamic District
Thompson Shanghai Expo features 254 guestrooms and suites, distinctive dining and nightlife venues, and event spaces designed to connect guests with Shanghai’s evolving urban landscape. The hotel forms part of Expo Place, a mixed-use complex that blends commercial spaces, art, and leisure along the Huangpu River.
Nearby landmarks include the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, Mercedes-Benz Arena, and China Art Museum, with convenient access to the Shanghai Expo Culture Park and public transport.
Design Inspired by the Expo Legacy
The architecture, created by GP Architects New York, draws inspiration from the district’s transition from an industrial area to a cultural hub. Its curved glass façade reflects the river, creating a dialogue between the natural and urban surroundings.
The interiors, designed by SilverFox Studios (Singapore), are inspired by the pavilions of the Expo 2010 Shanghai. They feature exposed steel, warm woods, and layered textures that merge modern design with nostalgic elements, evoking the spirit of creativity and reinvention that defines both Shanghai and the Thompson brand.
Rooms and Suites
Each of the hotel’s 254 rooms and suites offers floor-to-ceiling windows with city or river views. The interiors combine industrial details with soft materials and local artistry. Amenities include marble bathrooms, minibars, Dyson hairdryers, and coffee machines.
Dining and Social Spaces
Thompson Shanghai Expo introduces three culinary and nightlife venues:
Fishermen’s Pavilion: A contemporary Chinese restaurant offering five regional cuisines from the Yangtze River Delta, with a focus on seafood and freshwater fish.
BAOBAO Lounge: A casual indoor-outdoor venue serving steamed delicacies, local beverages, and light bites.
TOTS: A rooftop bar and social destination with river views, cocktails, DJ sets, and live entertainment.
Events and Experiences
The hotel features eight event venues, including Thompson Hall, one of the largest ballrooms in the Expo district. The 1,100-square-meter space accommodates up to 1,150 guests. Other event areas include The Oval, an elliptical venue ideal for creative gatherings, and several meeting rooms with natural light and advanced technology.
In true Thompson style, the hotel’s programming includes collaborations with local artists and cultural collectives. Activities such as riverside runs, music events, and creative workshops connect guests with the city’s energy.
