IATA Releases 2026 Updates to Cargo and Ground Operations Manuals

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released the 2026 editions of its key industry manuals for cargo and ground operations, which include approximately 100 updates to align with current international standards and operational practices.

Key updates include:

IATA Battery Regulations (BSR) 12th Edition 2025 Digital

Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and Battery Shipping Regulations (BSR)

Battery-related changes form a significant part of the 2026 revisions, reflecting growing air transport volumes and new battery chemistries. Updates address lithium battery shipments, hybrid vehicle batteries, and passenger use of power banks.

Highlights:

  • New shipping names for hybrid-powered vehicles
  • Updated guidance on passenger carriage of power banks and spare batteries
  • Revised operator variations for Thailand, France, and the UK
  • Standardized text across 290 operator variations
  • Additional details on safety data sheet requirements
  • A new Appendix H outlining expected 2027 changes

For the BSR:

  • Tighter charge limits for lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment
  • A new compliance checklist for shippers
  • Expanded list of Designated Postal Operators authorized to handle lithium battery equipment

Live Animals Regulations (LAR)

IATA Live Animal Regulations: 50 Years of Pet Travel Milestones | World Pet  Travel

The LAR now includes expanded guidance on animal care during transport, container specifications, and attendant training requirements.

Key changes include:

  • Standardized competency-based training for attendants
  • Brazil’s adoption of the LAR framework
  • Revised container material and ventilation standards
  • Updated handling guidance for poultry, pangolins, hooded raptors, and birds of prey

IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM)

The IGOM revisions focus on operational safety and efficiency, particularly for passenger handling and baggage management.

Updates include:

  • Procedures for unaccompanied minors, inadmissible and unruly passengers, and those needing medical assistance
  • Baggage tracking aligned with IATA Resolution 753
  • Updated potable water handling and aircraft turnaround procedures

Digital Tools

New digital tools improve accessibility and compliance:

  • LAR Verify, an online portal providing digital access and automated compliance checks
  • A digital directory of dangerous goods
  • An enhanced battery classification tool, now including sodium-ion batteries
