Foundation Stone Laid for Hyatt Regency Gangtok, Adding 150 Rooms to City Centre
The Government of Sikkim has laid the foundation stone for Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a 150-room hotel planned in the central part of the capital. The ceremony took place at Chintan Bhawan in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay).
The project forms part of the state’s efforts to strengthen hospitality infrastructure and support Gangtok’s growth as a destination for leisure, weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) travel.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the project as a sign of partnership between the state and private investors. He noted that tourism remains a key contributor to Sikkim’s economy, with visitor numbers exceeding the state’s population by more than twice annually. He also expressed confidence that the hotel would incorporate local art, cuisine and talent into its operations.
Strategic Location in Central Gangtok
The hotel will be located in the Mintokgang area within the Suryavilas mixed-use development, around 2 km from MG Marg. It is close to Enchey Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and situated along State Highway 310, the road leading to Nathu La Pass.
Gangtok recorded more than 17 lakh tourist arrivals in 2025, including over 71,000 international visitors. The state currently has the capacity to host approximately 42,000–45,000 tourists per day. The addition of 150 rooms in the city centre is expected to help address demand in the upper-upscale segment.

Gyalshing Hotels Private Limited, a special-purpose vehicle under SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, the hospitality arm of SM Developers, will develop the Hyatt Regency hotel on a 3.27-acre site. The property is being designed by SCSY Studio, Singapore.

The project aligns with national tourism initiatives such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0.
Economic Impact
The Hyatt Regency development is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities and strengthen local supply chains across agriculture, transport, handicrafts, and other service sectors.
Through the Hyatt Regency project, the Government of Sikkim continues to invite private investment in hospitality infrastructure, supporting tourism-led economic activity in Gangtok and the wider region.
