Avani Kyoto to Open in 2030 as Minor Hotels Enters Japan Market

Avani Kyoto Development Planned in Central Kyoto
Minor Hotels has announced the development of Avani Kyoto, marking the brand’s entry into Japan. Scheduled to open in 2030, the project is being developed in partnership with Taisei Corporation and Heiwa Real Estate Co., Ltd., with Minor Hotels participating as both investor and operator.
The hotel will be located on Karasuma Street in central Kyoto, on the site of the former Kyoto Shimbun headquarters. The property will have direct access to Marutamachi Station on the Karasuma Subway Line and will be within walking distance of major cultural attractions, including the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle.

The project will involve renovating the existing North Building and constructing a new South Building, creating a hotel with approximately 240 guestrooms.
Designed to accommodate both short-term and extended stays, the hotel will incorporate contemporary facilities while drawing inspiration from Kyoto’s architectural character. Dining venues and communal spaces will be integrated throughout the property, supporting Avani’s focus on flexible and modern hospitality experiences.
Commenting on the development, William E. Heinecke, Founder and Chairman of Minor International, said the project represents an important step in the company’s expansion plans in Japan and reflects a commitment to creating a hotel that complements Kyoto’s character while serving the needs of modern travellers.
The Avani Kyoto project forms part of Minor Hotels’ broader growth strategy in Japan through its joint venture with Royal Holdings Co., Ltd. The partnership is expected to support the introduction of additional hotels under the Anantara, Avani and Tivoli brands across key urban and leisure destinations in the country.
Avani Hotels & Resorts currently operates more than 40 properties across multiple international markets. The brand continues to expand its presence with upcoming developments across Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
