West Bengal Identifies Land for Second Airport

The West Bengal Government has identified around 2,000 acres of land in Kalyani, Nadia district, for the development of Kolkata’s second greenfield airport. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who said the proposed airport is expected to strengthen the state’s aviation infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.

The proposed airport is planned to meet the growing demand for air travel in and around Kolkata while supporting economic development across West Bengal.

According to government officials, the identified land extends from the rear of AIIMS Kalyani to Narapati Para in Simurali, under the Chakdaha Assembly constituency. The site is located close to National Highway-12 (NH-12), providing road access, and is around 60 kilometres from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, with a travel time of approximately one hour by road.

Officials said preliminary soil testing has been completed and the land meets the technical requirements for airport development.

The project has been proposed as a greenfield airport, meaning it will be developed on previously undeveloped land rather than through the expansion of an existing airport. The airport is expected to include passenger terminals, cargo facilities, runways and space for future expansion.

Once approved, the project is expected to increase aviation capacity for Kolkata and nearby districts. It may also help reduce pressure on the existing airport while supporting additional domestic and international flight operations.

The proposed airport is also expected to improve air connectivity for residents of Nadia and neighbouring districts, while creating opportunities for airlines to introduce additional routes.

During a Transport Department event, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also announced that West Bengal has joined the Central Government’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Regional

Connectivity Scheme, which aims to improve regional air connectivity and make air travel more accessible.

The Chief Minister said the state has also received support from the Central Government for airport expansion projects at:

• Balurghat
• Malda
• Purulia

These projects are expected to improve connectivity across the state while supporting tourism, trade and investment.

Speaking on the state’s aviation sector, the Chief Minister said improving airport infrastructure could help attract more airlines and strengthen domestic and international air connectivity in the future.

Large-scale airport projects are expected to create jobs during both construction and operation, while also boosting business activity in nearby regions of West Bengal.
