Chikhal Kalo Festival Brings Communities Together in Goa

Goa celebrated Chikhal Kalo, a traditional festival held near Shree Devki Krishna Temple in Marcel, where devotees and visitors gathered to take part in the customary mud play inspired by Lord Krishna’s childhood.

The festival saw participation from people of all age groups, who joined in traditional mud games and cultural activities in an atmosphere of devotion and community participation. The annual event continues to reflect Goa’s cultural traditions and attracts both local residents and visitors.

Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte attended the celebrations, interacting with devotees and observing the traditional mud play, which remains a central part of the festival.

Speaking on the occasion, Khaunte said festivals such as Chikhal Kalo play an important role in preserving Goa’s cultural heritage. He added that the state’s ‘Goa Beyond Beaches’ initiative aims to promote Goa’s festivals, traditions, villages and heritage alongside its coastal attractions.

He also highlighted the recently launched Ekadasha Teerth Yatra, which encourages visitors to explore Goa’s historic temples while supporting local communities. Khaunte noted that the participation of children and families helps ensure that these traditions continue to be passed on to future generations.

The celebrations concluded with devotees continuing the traditional mud play, reinforcing Chikhal Kalo’s place in Goa’s cultural calendar and its role in preserving the state’s heritage.
