The Monarch San Antonio Opens in the Hemisfair District
More than a decade in development, The Monarch San Antonio, Curio Collection by Hilton, has opened in the redeveloped Hemisfair District, adding a new hospitality address to downtown San Antonio. Stays are now available at the 17-storey property, which represents a $185 million investment in the area’s evolving hotel and tourism landscape.
Located near the River Walk and the Alamo, the hotel places guests within walking distance of several of the city’s cultural landmarks while offering a quieter setting overlooking the adjacent park. The Monarch is part of the Curio Collection by Hilton portfolio, a group of independent hotels connected through Hilton’s global network while maintaining a distinct identity tied to their destination.
“We’re proud to introduce The Monarch as a hotel that reflects the Zachry family’s longstanding connection to San Antonio and their belief in its future,” said Rick Slutter, Managing Director at Zachry Hospitality.
“This site holds deep meaning for the family, and the goal was to honour what once stood here while contributing to the city’s ongoing development. The Monarch is designed as a place where people can gather, stay and experience San Antonio.”
Design inspired by the monarch butterfly

The hotel was designed by San Antonio-based Overland Partners, with interiors by The Gettys Group and KBAA. The concept draws inspiration from the monarch butterflies that migrate through the region each year. Architectural forms, open-air spaces and interior details reflect different stages of the butterfly’s journey, symbolising transformation and movement.
The building’s curved structure opens toward the neighbouring park, creating a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Materials and finishes incorporate regional influences, including locally sourced art, textiles and ceramics displayed throughout the property.
Inside, the lobby features high arches, vertical wood elements and layered textures that create a sense of movement. A floating staircase and sculptural lighting anchor the space, while seating areas combine quiet corners with larger gathering spaces.
Rooms and guest experience

The Monarch San Antonio features 200 guest rooms, including 28 suites. Designed to maximise natural light and views of the surrounding park, the rooms include Italian SFERRA linens, blackout curtains, ergonomic workspaces and integrated technology through interactive tablets. Bathrooms feature earth-toned finishes and products from Texas-based brand Niven Morgan.
Additional in-room touches, such as ambient lighting and scent diffusers, are intended to create a calm and comfortable environment for guests.
Dining across three venues

The hotel’s culinary programme is led by Executive Chef Jae H. Lee and includes three dining concepts located throughout the property.
Oak & Amber, the hotel’s signature restaurant near the lobby, centres around a mesquite-and-oak hearth where dishes are prepared over Texas post oak and pecan wood. The dinner menu focuses on regional ingredients, seafood and steaks, including a tableside prime rib service featuring dry-aged Texas beef. The restaurant also includes a raw bar and a wine list with more than 300 labels.
On the rooftop, Aleteo offers indoor and outdoor seating with views of downtown San Antonio. Inspired by Yucatán cuisine, the menu highlights ceviches, aguachiles and other raw or cured dishes alongside mezcal-based cocktails. The restaurant also features a tortilla programme using imported corn ground in-house.
The third concept, The Nectarie Café, is a French-inspired café serving breakfast and lunch. The menu includes coffee from La Colombe, loose-leaf teas from Rare Tea Co., and pastries made with laminated dough techniques, alongside classic Parisian dishes. A takeaway window also serves visitors to the surrounding park and neighbourhood.
Wellness and event spaces
Wellness facilities include a spa with four treatment rooms offering massages, facials and hydrothermal experiences. Guests can also access infrared sauna sessions, cold plunges and IV vitamin therapy.
A fitness studio equipped with neuroactive training equipment supports strength, cardio and mobility workouts. The third-floor pool deck, with cabanas and seating areas, provides an outdoor retreat above the city.
For meetings and events, the hotel offers 15,000 square feet of event space across eight venues, including the 5,000-square-foot Meridian Ballroom. The spaces are located on one floor and feature natural light and integrated event technology.
A public art installation for the district
Adjacent to the hotel, La Mariposa serves as a public art installation designed as a gathering point for the Hemisfair District. The pavilion features three wings constructed with stained glass panels that reflect the surrounding landscape.
More than three miles of integrated LED lighting illuminate the structure at night, allowing the installation to change colours for seasons and local celebrations.
Part of Hilton Honors

The Monarch San Antonio participates in the Hilton Honors loyalty programme, which allows members to earn and redeem points across Hilton’s global portfolio. Members booking directly through Hilton can access benefits such as discounted member rates, Wi-Fi and the Hilton Honors mobile app.
The hotel is now open in downtown San Antonio, with room rates starting at $398 per night.
