Island Reboot: Maldives Teams Up with India for Tourism Revival

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) to boost tourism cooperation between the Maldives and India. This move aims to attract more Indian travellers, especially after a decline in Indian visitors following political tensions earlier this year.

The MoU promotes bilateral tourism through joint marketing and organizing events

The MoU promotes bilateral tourism through joint marketing initiatives, sharing best practices to enhance service standards and operational efficiencies, organizing joint events, roadshows, and fairs, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. In line with these objectives, MATATO plans to conduct roadshows in major Indian cities with good flight connectivity, such as Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore.

IATO represents over 1,800 tour operators across India

As the main tourism body in the Maldives, MATATO is dedicated to developing and promoting the travel and tourism industry in the country. On the other hand, IATO represents over 1,800 tour operators across India.

The Maldives heavily relies on tourism for its economy but has faced challenges due to political tensions between its main markets – India and China. The country aims to reach 2.1 million arrivals this year, up from 1.9 million last year. Despite a decline in Indian arrivals, overall arrivals have seen a 10.8 percent increase from last year, with China reclaiming its position as the most significant source market for the Maldives.
