Newark Liberty International Achieves Best On-Time Flight Performance Among Major Northeast Airports
Newark Liberty International Airport has recorded the highest on-time flight performance among major airports in the northeastern United States so far in 2026, marking a significant operational improvement compared to the challenges experienced last year.
The achievement comes as United Airlines, the airport’s largest carrier, reported its best-ever on-time performance at Newark during April and May while serving nearly 5.8 million passengers.

Operational Improvements Support Airport Performance
During 2025, Newark Liberty International Airport faced several operational challenges including air traffic control staffing shortages, radar and radio outages and runway construction work.
According to the report, improvements implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation helped improve airport operations through staffing enhancements, technology upgrades and flight schedule adjustments aligned with airport capacity.
United Airlines Reports Record Operational Results
United Airlines reported a strong start to the summer travel season, carrying a record three million passengers across its network during the Memorial Day holiday period.
The airline stated that nearly 70% of passengers arrived on time during the travel period. It also expects to carry more than 53 million travellers during the summer season.
Scott Kirby said the airport’s improved performance reflects the combined efforts of aviation authorities and nearly 15,000 local United employees working at Newark.

Newark Continues as a Major International Gateway
Newark Liberty International Airport plays a key role within United Airlines’ global network.
The airport connects passengers to nearly 320 destinations across North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, including approximately 120 destinations accessible with one stop.
The airport also offers nonstop services to 42 destinations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. According to the airline, this represents more transatlantic destinations than any other carrier serving the New York metropolitan area.
New International Routes Expand Connectivity
United Airlines has recently launched new services from Newark to destinations including Split in Croatia, Bari in Italy, Glasgow in Scotland and Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
The airline also plans to become the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop flights between Newark and Seoul starting in September 2026. Additional service to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands is scheduled to begin later in the year.
Technology Investments Enhance Passenger Experience
United Airlines continues to invest in passenger services and technology across its network.
Current initiatives include the installation of Starlink Wi-Fi across regional aircraft, expanded inflight entertainment options, larger overhead storage bins and enhanced digital tools through the United mobile app.
The airline said these investments are designed to improve convenience and flexibility for travellers throughout their journey.
