The Evolution of Emirates Cabin Crew Uniforms

The Emirates cabin crew uniform has been a consistent element of the airline’s identity since its introduction in 1985. Designed to reflect the airline’s brand and culture, the uniform has evolved over the years while maintaining its core colours and style elements.

Design and features

The uniform combines practicality, comfort, and durability. Nano-coated fabrics provide stain and crease resistance, ensuring the uniform remains functional on long-haul flights. Adjustments over time have focused on fit and comfort, while retaining a recognizable Emirates look.

Key milestones

  • 1985 – Initial design: The first uniform featured beige jackets with red piping, a cream blouse, a red ribbon, a red hat with the Emirates logo, and a cream chiffon scarf with seven pleats representing the seven Emirates. Male crew wore grey suits with red ties.

  • 1987 – Updates: Female uniforms introduced gold buttons, longer skirts with extended pleats, and the signature red hat and veil. Summer safari dresses were introduced for warmer weather. Male uniforms remained largely unchanged.

  • 1997 – Paco Rabanne collaboration: The uniforms received updated cuts and fits. Female uniforms included jacquard logo prints under slimline jackets; male uniforms had navy jackets and beige trousers.

  • 2008 – Airbus A380 update: Female uniforms featured subtle pinstripes, kick pleats in skirts, and red trims. The hat was updated, and accessories were adjusted in tone. Male uniforms included brown pinstripes with red trim and coordinating ties.

  • 2023 – Choice and customization: Female cabin crew gained the option to choose from 15 shoe styles. Red leather handbags and belts were updated to complement the uniform.

Today, Emirates cabin crew wear uniforms designed for functionality and comfort, supporting operations across more than 140 destinations. The uniform reflects the airline’s heritage and provides consistency for its 25,000 crew members.
