Taj Enters Egypt with Signing of 300-Key Hotel in Cairo

Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has announced the signing of a Taj hotel in Cairo, marking the brand’s debut in Egypt and furthering its international expansion strategy.

Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, IHCL, said that Cairo’s cultural heritage and its position linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe make it an important global destination. He noted that the Taj brand’s entry into Cairo aligns with IHCL’s focus on establishing a presence in key gateway cities and extending Taj’s service philosophy to new international markets.

The project is being undertaken in partnership with Egyptian General Company for Tourism & Hotels (EGOTH). Hisham El Demery, Chief Executive Officer of EGOTH, said the redevelopment of the historic Grand Continental Hotel into Taj Cairo reflects EGOTH’s efforts to preserve Egypt’s architectural heritage while adapting it for contemporary hospitality use, in collaboration with IHCL.

The 300-key Taj Cairo will be located in Opera Square, a historic and cultural district in central Cairo. The hotel will overlook the Azbakeya Garden, one of the city’s oldest public parks, and will be situated within the heritage district, a short drive from the Nile. The project plans to retain key elements of the original building’s façade and architectural character, while incorporating modern design, updated amenities and Taj-branded hospitality.

Planned facilities at Taj Cairo include an all-day dining restaurant, speciality dining venues, wellness facilities, and banqueting spaces for corporate meetings and social events.

Cairo, often referred to as the “City of a Thousand Minarets,” is Egypt’s cultural, political and economic centre. The city is home to landmarks such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum, alongside historic mosques, markets, and neighbourhoods that continue to shape its identity as a major tourism destination.
