Phuket Set to Host Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026

Phuket Prepares to Host GSTC 2026, Reinforcing Thailand’s Sustainable Tourism Focus

Tourism Authority of Thailand has confirmed that Phuket is fully prepared to host the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 from 21 to 24 April 2026. The event is expected to support Thailand’s positioning as a destination for sustainable tourism and international conferences.

The announcement reflects collaboration between multiple stakeholders, including the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, alongside local authorities in Phuket.

Preparations and destination readiness

Authorities in Phuket have implemented coordinated plans covering venue operations, visitor safety and public services. Efforts include involvement from local administration, tourist police and public health agencies, alongside ongoing work in waste management, urban maintenance and environmental standards.

The conference will be hosted across multiple venues, including Royal Phuket City Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town and Kata Thani Beach Resort and Spa.

Focus on sustainability and industry collaboration

Held under themes such as sustainable hospitality, resilient cities and visitor management, the conference is expected to bring together around 600 delegates from more than 30 countries. Participants will include policymakers, tourism operators, academics and sustainability experts.

Key discussions will focus on carbon reduction, biodiversity conservation, destination management and the role of technology in supporting sustainable tourism practices.

Responsible event approach

Organisers have indicated that the event will follow responsible event management practices, including minimising waste, reducing paper use through digital solutions and incorporating environmentally conscious materials. Initiatives are also expected to support local communities and align with international sustainability standards.

Expected impact

Hosting GSTC 2026 is anticipated to contribute to local economic activity through international participation, while also supporting knowledge exchange and capacity building within Thailand’s tourism sector. The event aligns with broader efforts to strengthen sustainable tourism frameworks and promote balanced destination development.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “Hosting GSTC 2026 marks an important milestone to elevate standards, strengthen knowledge exchange, and reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to responsible tourism that benefits both people and the environment. This reflects TAT’s mission to position the Kingdom as a world-class sustainable tourism destination by creating lasting value. Through cross-sector collaboration, international standards, and responsible tourism management, we are advancing an ecosystem where growth and sustainability go hand in hand.”

Teeraphong

Teeraphong said, “On behalf of Phuket Province, it is an honour to host GSTC 2026, reflecting Phuket’s readiness as an international conference destination. Comprehensive preparations have been undertaken to ensure safety, convenience, and high environmental management standards, while maintaining the well-being of local communities. We are confident the conference will deliver lasting value for Phuket and Thailand.”

Randy Durband

Randy Durband said, “We are delighted to gather in Phuket for GSTC2026, in a destination that holds a prominent place on the global tourism map. Phuket provides an important backdrop for bringing together tourism leaders and stakeholders from around the world to share knowledge and advance more sustainable practices across the sector.”
