Niyama Private Islands Maldives Opens New Surf Shack at Vodi Point
The Maldives has long attracted surfers from around the world, with the southern atolls known for consistent swells and breaks ranging from shore-based waves to nearby reef points accessible by speedboat. At Niyama Private Islands, Maldives, waves break at Vodi Point, located on the westernmost tip of the resort’s twin-island setting.
To complement the surf lifestyle, the resort has introduced a new Surf Shack, designed as a relaxed space for guests to unwind between sessions. The thatched-roof venue features an upper deck with seating and ocean views, along with picnic-style tables on the beach level.
In line with the resort’s sustainability approach, Area Chief of Engineering Michael Patrick Slevin shared that 75% of the construction materials were repurposed, blending a beach-inspired look with an environmentally conscious build.

The Surf Shack also offers a casual food-and-drink experience, featuring a grill menu inspired by popular surf destinations. Options include Australian fish and chips, Indonesian satay, Mexican nachos and Japanese takoyaki. The beverage selection focuses on rum, featuring a range of labels and cocktails influenced by well-known surf breaks.

As the day transitions into evening, the beachfront atmosphere shifts with music and sunset gatherings. The resort also hosts rum-and-reggae Sundays, adding a weekly social element for guests.

Surfers staying at Niyama can choose between time on the water and downtime on shore. The resort includes a Surf Centre for equipment needs, and recovery-focused treatments are available at Drift by Niyama, supporting muscle recovery, skin care and energy restoration. Resident professional surfers are also available to advise guests on wave conditions and technique.

Commenting on the launch, Hafidh Al Busaidy, General Manager of Niyama Private Islands Maldives, said, “The new Surf Shack is part of the evolved Niyama experience, with refurbishment of the resort’s facilities, new culinary concepts, and a stronger focus on active lifestyle and wellness.”
