Macau Records Over 1 Million Tourist Arrivals During Christmas Golden Week
Macau has recorded a new annual high in visitor arrivals, welcoming more than 1 million tourists during the week between the Macau Special Administrative Region’s establishment day on December 20 and the Christmas holidays. The rise in arrivals during the Christmas Golden Week reflects the region’s continued recovery and steady demand as a regional travel destination.
The increased footfall during this period supported activity across Macau’s hospitality, retail, and entertainment sectors, with hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and leisure venues reporting higher demand. The Christmas Golden Week has emerged as one of the city’s key travel periods toward the end of the year.
Golden Week, which coincides with both the Macau SAR’s establishment anniversary and the Christmas holiday period, has become a vital travel window for the city. The stretch between December 20 and Christmas now consistently attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly from mainland China, as well as travellers from overseas markets.
During this period, tourists visit casinos, integrated resorts, entertainment venues, heritage areas, and shopping districts. Seasonal decorations, events, and promotional activities across the city also drive higher weekday visitor activity.
Travel demand has been supported by eased travel conditions, targeted tourism promotions, and Macau’s positioning as a short-haul holiday destination within the region.
Hotels across Cotai and the historic city centre reported high occupancy levels during the Golden Week period. Restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues also saw increased patronage, reflecting the concentration of visitors during the holiday week.
Retail areas such as Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and the Cotai Strip experienced higher shopper traffic, with visitors purchasing luxury goods, local products, and seasonal items. The convergence of holiday travel and retail promotions contributed to higher sales volumes during the period.

Entertainment offerings, including shows, concerts, and gaming facilities, also recorded higher attendance as visitors sought leisure experiences alongside sightseeing.
While mainland China continues to be Macau’s most significant source market, the Christmas Golden Week also attracted visitors from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Macau’s proximity to southern China and its connectivity with Hong Kong make it a convenient destination for short leisure trips.
The city also continues to function as a transit and stopover point for travellers moving within the Greater Bay Area, reinforcing its role in regional tourism flows.

The rise in visitor numbers during the Christmas Golden Week highlights Macau’s ongoing tourism recovery following the pandemic-affected years. Visitor volumes have shown gradual improvement across multiple travel periods in recent years, with the year-end holiday season becoming increasingly significant.
Looking ahead, tourism authorities and industry stakeholders are focusing on improving visitor experiences, strengthening air and regional connectivity, and promoting cultural and non-gaming attractions. These efforts aim to support stable growth and diversify Macau’s tourism base over time.
Macau’s crossing of the 1 million visitor mark during the Christmas Golden Week reflects steady demand and continued momentum in the city’s tourism sector. The seasonal surge has supported economic activity across hospitality, retail, and entertainment, underscoring the importance of the year-end travel period in Macau’s tourism calendar.
