Hungary Moves Closer to Direct Flight Link with India to Boost Tourism and Business

India continues to attract visitors with its vibrant festivals, diverse landscapes, and rich spiritual traditions. However, many Hungarians find their journey complicated by long layovers and connecting flights. Despite the growing interest in travel to India, the absence of a nonstop service from Budapest poses a significant barrier. Recent booking data confirms this rising demand, highlighting the need for a direct route to India.

India, expecting nearly 20 million international visitors in 2025, is expanding access through regional airports and eco-conscious travel initiatives. This development aims to make arrivals smoother for travellers from across the world.

At a recent networking event in Budapest’s Karol Bagh, Hungarian travel agents met with Indian tour operators to learn about new offerings—from Tamil Nadu’s tea plantations to Rajasthan’s historic forts. Presentations emphasised India’s focus on sustainable tourism and improved regional connectivity, demonstrating readiness to welcome Hungarian travellers.

Hungarian tourism professionals are eager to introduce travellers to India’s cultural and natural variety, but the absence of nonstop flights remains a key concern. Long stopovers deter many, underlining the need for a direct service.

In March 2025, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that negotiations are underway to establish nonstop connections, starting with a Budapest–Mumbai route. Discussions are also ongoing for a Budapest–New Delhi link, which would further strengthen access to India’s main hubs.

Direct flights would reduce travel time, making trips more appealing for leisure travellers and more efficient for business leaders and diplomats. The route could also establish Hungary as a strategic gateway between Central Europe and India, encouraging trade, academic exchange, and cultural partnerships.

Momentum for the route is building among government bodies, airlines, and the tourism sector. Wizz Air’s upcoming Mumbai flights are seen as a first step toward daily operations and additional connections to New Delhi.

As passenger interest continues to rise, the case for expanding nonstop services between Budapest and India is becoming stronger. The new routes would provide easier access for tourists, streamline business travel, and create new opportunities for cooperation between the two nations.
