Hilton Survey Finds Over Half of Americans Cut Holiday Family Visits Short
A recent survey conducted by Hilton reveals that although many Americans travel home for the holidays, spending time with extended family can be difficult. More than half of those who stay with relatives admit to often making excuses to shorten their visits.
Conducted in partnership with Morning Consult, the survey of 2,200 adults found that 15% of Americans plan to stay overnight with family this holiday season. Key insights include:
36% say they sleep somewhere other than a bed, such as a couch, air mattress, or floor.
32% report poorer sleep when staying with relatives.
38% say they need personal time within 24 hours of arrival.
25% eat breakfast, but they don’t enjoy it just to be polite.
44% cite imposed bedtimes, 43% mention matching outfits, and 39% note mandatory group activities as the most frustrating aspects of the holiday traditions.
53% admit to cutting visits short.
Many travellers said they value private bathrooms, personal space, and a comfortable bed during the holidays. Hosts, too, feel the strain—63% find hosting exhausting, and 46% say they’d enjoy the holidays more if guests stayed elsewhere.
To help travelers unwind this season, Hilton is promoting The Hilton Sale, available for bookings through December 15 for stays between November 12 and April 6, 2026. Guests can access up to 25% off stays at participating properties across Hilton’s global portfolio.

For those seeking a change of scenery, Hilton resorts across destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Hawaii offer opportunities to relax, recharge, and spend the holidays in a unique way.
