Emirates SkyCargo and LODD Autonomous Sign MoU to Explore Drone-Based Cargo Solutions

Emirates SkyCargo and LODD Autonomous signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the 2025 Dubai Airshow to explore the development and deployment of next-generation air cargo solutions.

The MoU was signed by Badr Abbas, Emirates SkyCargo’s Divisional Senior Vice President, and Rashid Al Manai, Chief Executive Officer of LODD Autonomous. Under the agreement, both organisations will work together to assess the use of VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft across Emirates SkyCargo’s global network. This collaboration will include feasibility studies, regulatory discussions, and live demonstrations. Emirates SkyCargo will contribute its operational experience to LODD’s experimental activities through 2027, helping inform design and development for potential regional and international applications.

The agreement follows the first test flight of LODD’s Hili, an unmanned hybrid heavy-lift cargo aircraft developed in Abu Dhabi. Hili is fully autonomous from takeoff to landing and is designed to carry payloads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of up to 700 kilometres. As part of its continued investment in emerging technologies for cargo movement, Emirates SkyCargo will evaluate the Hili for potential integration into its ground fleet to support operations at its dual airport hub.

Badr Abbas said: “This partnership with LODD reflects our focus on developing solutions that address customer transport needs. New technologies are shaping the next phase of logistics, and Emirates SkyCargo aims to contribute its experience to support their development. We look forward to working with LODD to study the possible use of this UAE-built platform.”

Rashid Mattar Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, said: “The UAE places strong emphasis on adopting innovation to support national progress. Our collaboration with Emirates SkyCargo combines LODD’s technology with the country’s commitment to efficient and sustainable logistics. Through this initiative, we aim to advance drone-enabled delivery options while maintaining high standards of safety and regulatory compliance.”

Emirates SkyCargo continues to focus on developing the logistics ecosystem. The cargo division connects a network of more than 150 destinations using a widebody fleet of over 260 aircraft. Earlier this year, it introduced Emirates Courier Express. This door-to-door service combines the cargo division’s logistics capabilities with the airline’s passenger network to support cross-border e-commerce.

LODD Autonomous, based in Abu Dhabi, develops unmanned and autonomous aerial cargo systems supported by AI-enabled software. Its technology aims to simplify logistics operations, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency. Supported by the Advanced Technology Research Council, LODD’s development of the Hili and its potential use within Emirates’ operations reflects ongoing efforts to expand the national technology ecosystem across research, development, and practical application.
