Airbus Delivers First A321XLR to Air Canada
Air Canada Adds Airbus A321XLR to Fleet Strategy
Airbus has delivered the first A321XLR to Air Canada, marking the first delivery under an order for 30 aircraft. The aircraft is leased from SMBC Aviation Capital and forms part of the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal plans.
The delivery makes Air Canada the first operator of the A321XLR in Canada. The aircraft is expected to support network development by bridging the gap between narrowbody short-haul and widebody long-haul operations, while also improving efficiency across selected routes.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft features a two-cabin configuration designed for longer routes. The premium cabin includes 14 Air Canada Signature Class seats in a 1-1 layout with direct aisle access, while the Economy cabin offers 168 seats. The aircraft also includes Airbus’ Airspace cabin design, with updated in-flight entertainment, Bluetooth audio, in-seat connectivity and expanded overhead storage. Ambient lighting has also been incorporated to support passenger comfort during long journeys.
The A321XLR is part of the A320neo Family and has a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. It offers lower fuel consumption per seat than earlier-generation aircraft, along with reductions in emissions and noise. The aircraft’s range allows Air Canada to operate non-stop routes from cities such as Montreal and Toronto to destinations including Berlin, Toulouse and Edinburgh.

As of March 2026, Airbus had recorded more than 500 orders for the A321XLR. The aircraft is compatible with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target for full SAF capability by 2030.
Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 136 Airbus aircraft and has 61 more on order, including A350 aircraft.
