Zurich Airport Runway Extensions Advance as Planning Documents Open for Public Review
Zurich Airport has entered the next phase of its runway extension project, with planning permission requests for the extension of runways 28 and 32 available for public review from 1 to 30 June 2026.
The infrastructure project is designed to improve flight safety, operational reliability and airport efficiency while supporting future air traffic demands.
The runway extensions were approved by Zurich voters on 3 March 2024.
Project Focuses on Safety Improvements
According to Zurich airport officials, the runway extension programme originates from a comprehensive safety review conducted in 2012.
The study identified around 30 measures to improve operational safety, with the extension of runways 28 and 32 considered one of the most significant recommendations.
The project aims to increase safety margins for aircraft operations while improving airport performance during varying weather conditions.
Detailed Planning Work Completed
Zurich Airport Ltd. has completed extensive technical and environmental planning for both runway projects.
The submitted documents include details covering runway construction, taxiway modifications, environmental impact assessments and infrastructure changes.
The plans also include the relocation of the Glatt River and adjustments to nearby roads, cycling routes, pedestrian pathways and utility infrastructure.
Runway 28 and Runway 32 Projects Differ in Scale
The two runway extension projects vary significantly in complexity.
The extension of Runway 32 will largely take place within the airport’s existing boundaries and is expected to require approximately two years of construction work.
The extension of Runway 28 is more complex and includes major earthworks, river relocation and infrastructure modifications. The overall construction period for this project is estimated at seven to eight years including preparatory work.
Construction is not expected to begin before 2030 and remains subject to regulatory approvals.
Runway Extensions Expected to Improve Operations
The planned 400-metre extension of Runway 28 will provide longer braking distances for aircraft, improving safety margins during landings and rejected take-offs.
Airport officials said the extension will also support greater operational stability and help reduce delays during evening and nighttime operations.
The 280-metre extension of Runway 32 will allow more long-haul aircraft to depart directly from the runway without requiring additional runway crossings.
According to the airport, this is expected to improve both punctuality and operational safety.
Glatt River Relocation Includes Environmental Enhancements
One of the major components of the Runway 28 project involves relocating the Glatt River.
Updated planning studies found that the river can remain completely open without the need for enclosed sections as previously considered.
The river’s course will be extended from approximately one kilometre to around 1.4 kilometres.
The project will also increase river-related natural habitats from 3.5 hectares to 9 hectares and create approximately four hectares of new reed meadow areas.
Additional improvements include new walking and cycling paths and a bridge for non-motorised traffic.
Airport Safety Zone Plan to Be Updated
The extension of Runway 32 requires modifications to the airport’s safety zone plan.
The updated plan is intended to protect surrounding airspace by regulating future obstacles such as buildings, towers, cranes, wind turbines and other structures that could affect aviation safety.
Public Consultation Runs Until End of June
The runway extension documents and revised safety zone plans will remain available for public review until 30 June 2026.
Airport officials have also installed information displays around the airport perimeter to provide additional details about the project and its planned development.
