WTTC Study Highlights Cruise Tourism Contribution to Communities

World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released its latest report, Cruising for Impact, outlining the role of cruise tourism in supporting communities and destinations worldwide.

The report examines how cruise activity contributes to local economies, employment and tourism development across coastal and port regions. It highlights the sector’s role in supporting livelihoods, strengthening local supply chains and generating economic activity.

According to the findings, cruise tourism contributed US$98.5 billion to global GDP in 2024 and generated a total economic output of US$199 billion. The sector supported 1.8 million jobs globally and accounted for US$60.1 billion in wages during the year.

Data from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) indicates that more than 60% of cruise passengers return to the destinations they first visited via cruise travel. This trend suggests continued tourism demand beyond initial visits.

The report also notes that over 1.4 million jobs are supported onshore, with one full-time job linked to approximately every 20 cruise passengers. Direct cruise-related spending reached US$93 billion, much of which is directed towards local businesses, including small and medium enterprises in destination markets.

WTTC outlines seven areas of impact, including employment and skills development, community engagement, cultural preservation, infrastructure, environmental initiatives, and crisis response. The report also highlights collaboration between governments, destinations and industry stakeholders in managing tourism growth.

With cruise passenger capacity projected to grow by 19% between 2022 and 2028, the sector is expected to continue contributing to tourism economies and local communities.

WTTC stated that integrating cruise tourism into broader development strategies, with a focus on local sourcing and workforce development, can support long-term outcomes for destinations.
