United Airlines Plans Record Expansion of Its Aircraft Fleet - The New York Times

United Airlines has outlined the next phase of its fleet and product strategy, with plans to add more than 250 aircraft by April 2028 as part of its ongoing expansion and fleet renewal efforts.

The airline stated that the additional aircraft will support fleet modernization, introduce new aircraft variants and expand onboard features across cabins. The plan also includes updates to seating, amenities and overall passenger experience.

As part of the expansion, United will introduce new narrowbody aircraft, including the Airbus A321neo “Coastliner” and the A321XLR. These aircraft will feature lie-flat seating, typically seen on widebody aircraft, along with updated cabin layouts and onboard features.

The airline is also adding Boeing 787-9 aircraft with updated interiors, including revised seating configurations and upgraded in-flight features across cabins. These aircraft are expected to begin international operations in 2026.

In addition, United plans to introduce the CRJ450 regional aircraft, designed to connect smaller cities with major hubs such as Denver and Chicago.

The broader plan includes enhancements such as onboard connectivity, updated entertainment systems, revised cabin interiors and expanded premium seating options. The airline is also continuing its work on fleet retrofits and operational upgrades introduced under its earlier growth strategy.

United indicated that these developments are part of its long-term approach to align fleet growth with network expansion and evolving passenger requirements.
