Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, Coorg Advances Biodiversity and Sustainability Practices
Guided by The Indian Hotels Company Limited’s ESG+ framework, which integrates environmental stewardship, community engagement, and responsible operations across its portfolio, Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa reflects this approach through a range of sustainability and biodiversity-focused initiatives.
Set within a 180-acre rainforest landscape in Coorg, the resort was developed over seven years with a focus on minimizing ecological impact. Only 30 acres were used for construction, without removing any trees. Building practices prioritised low-impact methods, including the on-site production of compressed stabilised earth blocks made from displaced soil and sun-dried to reduce emissions. Natural land contours were preserved, with pathways created without levelling, and excavated soil repurposed to create a freshwater lake that supports aquatic life, attracts migratory birds and contributes to rainwater harvesting.
These practices have supported a diverse ecosystem within the property, which is home to 310 bird species, 68 butterfly species, 79 mammal species and 32 frog species. The resort maintains an Air Quality Index consistently below 3 and operates as a plastic-free environment. A dedicated Batracharium, developed after identifying frog species on the property, provides guests with insight into local amphibian diversity through guided interactions led by an in-house naturalist. The Biodiversity Photography Club further encourages associates and guests to document and engage with the surrounding environment.
Guest experiences are designed to foster closer interaction with the landscape through guided forest walks, a Butterfly Park, honey cultivation supported by 32 active bee colonies, and pottery sessions using natural materials. A heritage conservatory highlights Kodava culture, linking ecological conservation with regional traditions.

Operational practices at the resort emphasise resource efficiency. Public spaces are naturally ventilated to reduce reliance on air conditioning, while natural lighting, LED fixtures, and low-wattage outdoor lighting help limit energy use and reduce disruption to nocturnal species. All wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation and flushing, and more than 84% of the resort’s electricity consumption over the past two years has been sourced from wind energy.

As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, the resort has transitioned to electric mobility across the estate. Following extensive trials to adapt vehicles to the property’s terrain, petrol-powered gypsys were replaced with Tata Punch EVs, reducing emissions and noise levels while limiting disturbance to wildlife. Safety features such as reinforced bars, non-slip flooring, transparent rain covers and weather-resistant interiors have been incorporated to improve accessibility, particularly for elderly guests.

Community engagement forms a key part of the resort’s operations, with over 31% of associates employed from nearby villages. Partnerships with local artisans and regional producers support livelihood creation and skills development within the surrounding community.

Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa has received EarthCheck Gold Certification, recognising its ongoing efforts in responsible tourism and environmental management.
