Sofitel Signs El Gouna Resort Project with Orascom Development Egypt

Mövenpick El Gouna to be repositioned as Sofitel-branded resort
Sofitel, part of Accor, has signed a management agreement with Orascom Development Egypt to reposition Mövenpick El Gouna as Sofitel El Gouna Resort on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
The project will involve a phased renovation programme starting in 2027, with the aim of transitioning the existing property into a Sofitel-branded resort. The development is being carried out in partnership with Arabian Peninsula Hospitality.
Located in El Gouna, a coastal town along the Red Sea, the resort will form part of a wider hospitality and lifestyle destination that combines residential, leisure and tourism infrastructure.
Renovation to introduce new rooms, dining and leisure facilities
Following the renovation, the resort is expected to feature 420 rooms and suites, along with a range of dining venues, wellness facilities, and event spaces. The design approach will incorporate elements of Sofitel’s brand identity alongside references to Egyptian culture.
The property is situated on a beachfront peninsula with access to both the sea and surrounding lagoons, supporting a mix of leisure and event-led demand.
El Gouna, located approximately 30 minutes from Hurghada International Airport, has developed into a year-round destination with residential communities, hotels, educational institutions and business facilities. The town also hosts cultural and sporting events that contribute to visitor activity.
Project aligned with broader tourism development in Egypt
The repositioning of the property reflects ongoing changes in Egypt’s hospitality sector, with a focus on upgrading existing assets and expanding branded hotel offerings.
The Red Sea region continues to attract both domestic and international travellers, supported by accessibility and a growing range of accommodation options. Within this context, the Sofitel El Gouna Resort project is expected to contribute to the area’s hospitality landscape.
The signing also adds to the hotel group’s presence in Egypt, alongside existing properties in Cairo and planned developments, including Sofitel Legend Giza Pyramids.
