Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade Set for Global Spotlight Under TAT Initiative

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is positioning the Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade for wider international recognition under its Signature Event Thailand initiative. The 2025 edition will be held from 20 to 24 December in Tha Rae Municipality, with expanded programming, enhanced storytelling, and immersive lighting and drone displays to enrich visitor engagement while supporting sustainable economic outcomes for local communities.

Held annually for more than a century, the Christmas Star Parade is a long-standing cultural tradition of Sakon Nakhon and a distinctive Christian celebration in Northeastern Thailand. Inspired by the guiding star associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, the procession reflects spiritual heritage, craftsmanship, and collective community identity.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said the Christmas Star Parade represents the creativity and continuity of the Tha Rae community. She noted that by strengthening storytelling and visitor experiences, TAT aims to introduce the tradition to international audiences while ensuring meaningful benefits for local residents. The festival’s cultural foundations, combined with contemporary creative elements, are intended to support its presence among Thailand’s recognised cultural events.

For 2025, TAT has incorporated contemporary features that complement the parade’s spiritual roots while broadening its appeal. Immersive lighting installations will illuminate heritage sites, including the Cathedral of St Michael the Archangel and Tha Rae’s century-old stone houses, highlighting the area’s historical character.

Visitor experiences across the five-day programme include AI-enabled photo points, sustainability-focused creative workshops, a family-oriented snow experience, and Amazing Thailand–branded illuminated star vehicles. Hands-on activities such as cupcake decoration, star ornament crafting, and recycled-material jewellery workshops encourage participation while reinforcing community involvement and responsible event practices.

From 20 to 22 December, and during the daytime programme on 23 December, activities will take place along the walking street and Martino Pavilion, creating a continuous, community-led celebration that blends culture, heritage, and festive life. Activities begin at 14.00 on 20 December, and at 10.00 on 21, 22, and 23 December. Visitors can explore local indigo textiles, locally made products, regional cuisine, and heritage walks through the historic Christian community. Evening cultural and music programmes begin at 19.00 and run until 22.30.

A visual highlight on 22 December will be the public display of illuminated star vehicles along Ratcharoen Road from 17.00.

The central procession takes place on 23 December. Float registration begins at 15.00, followed by formation at 16.00 at the Martino Pavilion. The illuminated star procession departs at 18.00 and returns at 20.00. The evening continues with performances by local schools and community groups, the official opening ceremony at 20.30, Christmas blessings, a nativity drama, presentations for illuminated star floats, variety music performances, and TAT’s drone light show.

On 24 December, the programme shifts to a traditional Christmas Eve observance. The handheld star procession gathers at 18.00 at the Martino Pavilion and departs at 18.30, circling the cathedral before entering the church. The evening continues with Christmas Mass and a nativity performance by local youth at the Grotto of the Infant Jesus, which concludes after the religious services.

By positioning the Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade within its portfolio of culturally distinctive festivals, TAT aims to increase global awareness of Thailand’s diverse cultural landscape. This approach aligns with the international recognition of Songkran in Thailand and the growing global interest in Loi Krathong, reflecting Thailand’s focus on sharing community-rooted cultural experiences with international audiences.
