LaGuardia Terminal B Electric Charging Project Supports Net-Zero Goals
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey along with LaGuardia Gateway Partners have announced a major infrastructure project at LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B focused on expanding electric charging systems for airport ground support equipment.
The project will add 164 new charging ports across Terminal B’s airside and baggage handling areas. Airport officials said the initiative is designed to support the transition from fossil fuel-powered equipment to electric alternatives as part of wider sustainability goals.
The charging expansion project is expected to be completed in 2027.
Charging Capacity at LaGuardia Terminal B Will More Than Double
The new project will significantly increase charging infrastructure at Terminal B.
Once completed, the airport terminal will have a total of 250 charging ports including the 86 existing units already in operation. The new charging systems will be installed across both concourses and the baggage hall.
Airport officials stated that the additional infrastructure will support airlines and ground handling operators using electric ground support equipment, commonly known as eGSE.
Project Supports Net-Zero Emissions Targets
The initiative forms part of the Port Authority’s long-term roadmap to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
According to the Port Authority, fossil fuel-powered ground service equipment currently contributes around 4% of emissions generated by operational partners at airport facilities.
The agency’s broader sustainability plan includes increasing the use of electric vehicles and equipment, expanding solar energy projects, supporting cleaner construction methods and improving building decarbonisation efforts.
Preliminary data released by the agency shows it achieved its interim target of reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2025.
The organisation is also targeting a 50% reduction in direct emissions by 2030.
Conrac Solutions to Deliver the Infrastructure
Conrac Solutions will work with LaGuardia Terminal Gateway Partners to design, construct and maintain the charging systems.
The company will also provide interim financing for the project and oversee a five-phase rollout plan for the installation of the charging stations.
After completion, Conrac Solutions will manage all 250 charging ports under an eight-year operations and maintenance agreement.
Airport Leaders Highlight Sustainability Efforts
Kathryn Garcia said transitioning airport equipment from fossil fuels to electric systems is one of several strategies identified to reduce emissions across the agency.
Kevin O’Toole said the charging infrastructure project demonstrates the shared commitment between the Port Authority and LaGuardia Gateway Partners to reduce the airport’s environmental impact.
Suzette Noble stated that sustainability has remained a priority throughout the redevelopment and operation of Terminal B.
She added that the project is intended to support airline operational needs while continuing efforts to lower carbon emissions.
FAA Funding Support Being Pursued
The project is also seeking support through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Voluntary Airport Low Emissions programme.
The programme provides funding support for airport initiatives aimed at improving air quality and supporting clean technology adoption.
Officials said the charging infrastructure project aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce aviation-related environmental impacts.
Conrac Solutions Expands Airport Infrastructure Work
Joshua Blum said the project represents an expansion of the company’s airport infrastructure operations beyond rental car facilities.
Conrac Solutions previously worked on the $580 million consolidated rental car and parking facility project at Newark Liberty International Airport which opened in 2023.
The company said the LaGuardia project will help maximise existing electrical infrastructure while improving operational reliability.
LaGuardia Terminal B Redevelopment Continues to Shape Airport Operations
Terminal B forms part of the wider redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport led by the Port Authority.
The $5.1 billion redevelopment project was completed in 2022 through a public-private partnership.
In 2023, Terminal B became the first airport terminal in North America to receive a five-star customer experience rating from Skytrax.
The terminal currently serves airlines including Air Canada, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Porter Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
