Japan Airlines (JAL) faced a massive cyber attack on its operations on December 26, 2025, bringing a halt to its external and internal operating systems.

Informing the public of the attack, Japan Airlines, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated, "Today, from 7:24 AM, we have been under cyber attack on our internal and external network devices, causing problems with the systems that communicate with external systems. We expect this to affect both domestic and international flights."

The incident highlights the rising number of cyber attacks in the aviation space.

In further updates of the situation, the airline mentioned that, "We identified the cause of the problem at 8:56 AM and took action. We are currently checking the system recovery status." The airline mentioned that they have also "identified the cause and scope of the failure and have restored the system. This problem was caused by a failure due to the sending of a large amount of data, and no customer data was leaked or virus damage occurred."

The airline had initially halted the ticket sales but the sale for domestic and international flights with JAL have now been resumed. However, the Airport Standby Service for domestic flights departing today has been suspended.
