American Airlines Announces $1 Billion Concourse D Expansion at Miami International Airport
Building on nearly four decades of operations in Miami, American Airlines has unveiled plans for a major expansion at Miami International Airport (MIA), reinforcing its long-standing presence in the region.
American CEO Robert Isom joined representatives from Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD), and local and federal officials to present renderings of the redesigned Concourse D. The project aims to improve airport operations, enhance passenger flow and support future international growth.
“Miami is an essential hub and international gateway for American, and it’s a key part of our history and our future,” said Isom.
“The reimagined D60 project will provide an improved experience for customers and team members. This investment, along with new premium lounges and additional routes, reflects our continued partnership with Miami-Dade County and the airport.”
A New Chapter for Concourse D

The Gate D60 expansion is scheduled to break ground in 2027. The three-level extension will add 17 new gates to accommodate larger aircraft, replacing remote boarding with direct jet-bridge access. The plan also includes separate adjoining boarding areas for each gate to create more space and improve passenger movement.
The design allows for future international arrivals processing, including direct third-floor access to MIA’s customs hall. Updated interiors will include expanded seating areas, indoor greenery, and additional dining and retail outlets.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the D60 expansion forms part of the airport’s broader modernization program aimed at improving the passenger experience over the coming years.
Supporting Connectivity
American currently operates around 400 daily departures from MIA and plans to run more than 380 peak daily flights this summer, connecting 155 destinations across 45 countries. The airline accounts for over 60% of passenger traffic at the airport.
MIA serves as American’s primary gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 90 destinations exclusively served by the airline from Miami. New routes this year include service to Milan, Italy, and Bimini, Bahamas.

Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s Vice President of MIA Operations, noted that more than 15,500 team members are based in Miami. He described the expansion as part of the airline’s long-term commitment to the region and its partnership with local authorities.
Economic and Community Impact
American remains the largest private-sector employer in Miami-Dade County and collaborates with educational institutions such as George T. Baker Aviation Technical College and Florida Memorial University’s Wyman School of Aviation to develop aviation talent locally.
The airline also supports community initiatives across South Florida and maintains close ties with the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the county’s economic development organization.
Premium Facilities and Technology Enhancements

As part of its broader investment at MIA, American has announced plans to open a new Flagship Lounge and expand its Admirals Club facilities. Over the past year, the airline has introduced additional self-service kiosks to streamline check-in and implemented operational technology to improve passenger connections.
The airline is also working with federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), on programs such as TSA PreCheck, Touchless ID, and Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) to improve efficiency while maintaining security standards.
With construction set to begin in 2027, the Concourse D expansion marks the next phase of American Airlines’ development at Miami International Airport, supporting long-term growth for both the airline and the region.
