American Airlines and OBAP Partner to Mark 50 Years of OBAP and 100 Years of Flight
Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) and American Airlines have announced a partnership in support of OBAP’s 50th anniversary celebration. As the official Title Sponsor, American Airlines joins OBAP in recognising five decades of efforts to expand awareness, access, and career opportunities in aviation and aerospace for individuals who may not have previously considered the industry.
The partnership aligns with American Airlines’ centennial year in 2026, marking 100 years of commercial flight operations and global connectivity.

“American Airlines is proud to sponsor OBAP’s 50th anniversary celebration and to continue our long-standing partnership,” said David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer of American Airlines.
“As we recognise our centennial year, we also acknowledge the importance of investing in people and partnerships that support future generations in aviation.”
A shared history in aviation progress
The collaboration reflects a shared legacy connected to expanding representation in aviation. In 1964, American Airlines hired Captain David E. Harris, recognised as the first Black commercial airline pilot in the United States. A decade later, Harris helped establish OBAP, then known as the Organization of Black Airline Pilots, with the aim of building a support network for underrepresented communities in aerospace careers.
“Captain David Harris’ achievement in 1964 helped shape meaningful change in aviation,” said Tennessee Garvey, OBAP Board Chair. “This partnership with American Airlines recognises past milestones while focusing on continued progress through access, equity, and career development.”
Anniversary events and celebrations

The partnership will officially begin on January 13 at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport, the location of OBAP’s first meeting. The initial gathering will bring together founders, industry leaders, and invited guests.
OBAP’s 50th anniversary conference will take place August 12–14 in Chicago and will include a documentary premiere, Hall of Fame induction, awards gala, youth engagement initiatives, career development workshops, and networking opportunities for pilots, engineers, technicians, and industry partners.
As American Airlines marks 100 years of flight and OBAP commemorates 50 years of organisational impact, the partnership reflects a continued commitment to collaboration, workforce development, and inclusive growth across the aviation industry.
