American Airlines Expands Eastern Caribbean Operations with Added Flights and Interisland Service
American Airlines has announced additional measures to support customers affected by the FAA-mandated airspace closure in the Eastern Caribbean by adding more flights, increasing seat capacity, and introducing limited-time interisland services.
The airline has added nearly 2,000 seats, bringing the total to almost 7,000, supported by 43 supplemental flights. These services are designed to improve connectivity between the Eastern Caribbean and the United States as airspace restrictions ease.
Interisland Flights via San Juan
On January 5, American, together with its wholly owned regional carrier Envoy Air, will operate interisland flights in the Eastern Caribbean for the first time in more than a decade. Two special flights will connect Anguilla (AXA) and Beef Island, British Virgin Islands (EIS), with San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU).
These flights are designed to provide customers with same-day onward connections to additional services between San Juan and Miami, including flights operated on larger aircraft.
January 5 interisland flights include:
AA9632: Anguilla (AXA) – San Juan (SJU)
AA9633: Beef Island (EIS) – San Juan (SJU)
Additional Capacity Between the Eastern Caribbean and Miami

American has also added additional flights between multiple Eastern Caribbean destinations and Miami (MIA) on January 4 and January 5, covering Anguilla, Barbados, Bonaire, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, and the British Virgin Islands. These flights are intended to help clear backlogs and restore travel options following the disruption.
Resumption and Expansion of Regional Flying

With the reopening of Eastern Caribbean airspace, American resumed scheduled services on January 4 and added nearly 5,000 seats in addition to its regular capacity. This included operating extra flights and, where feasible, deploying larger aircraft to accommodate demand.
The additional flying connects 15 Eastern Caribbean islands with American’s U.S. hubs at Miami (MIA), Charlotte (CLT), and Chicago O’Hare (ORD). Services on January 4 and January 5 also include expanded operations to destinations such as Antigua, Aruba, Curaçao, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Maarten, and St. Lucia.
American stated that these measures complement existing travel alerts and fare caps and are part of its ongoing efforts to support customers impacted by the temporary airspace closure, in coordination with federal partners and airport authorities.
