InterContinental Vilamoura Strengthens IHG’s Portugal Portfolio

IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of InterContinental Vilamoura – Algarve in partnership with HDP Algarve SA, further expanding its presence in Portugal’s hospitality sector.

Scheduled to open in April 2027, the property will undergo a comprehensive renovation and transition from the Crowne Plaza brand to InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. The hotel will feature 323 guestrooms, multiple dining venues, wellness and spa facilities, leisure amenities, and flexible meeting and event spaces.

Located near Vilamoura Marina, Praia de Vilamoura and several golf courses, the hotel is expected to cater to both leisure travellers and the growing meetings and events market in the Algarve region.

Willemijn Geels, Vice President, Development, Europe, IHG Hotels & Resorts, said the signing reflects the company’s continued focus on expanding its luxury portfolio in Portugal and strengthening its relationship with long-term partner HDP Algarve SA.

Mario Vasco Pereira, Chairman of HDP Algarve SA, said the repositioning of the property aligns with the company’s vision to enhance the hotel’s offering and meet changing traveller expectations in Vilamoura and the Algarve.

Portugal remains an important growth market for IHG in Southern Europe, supported by strong demand from both leisure and city-break travellers. The latest signing builds on the company’s existing portfolio in the country, which includes InterContinental Cascais-Estoril, Hotel Indigo Albufeira, Kimpton Atlântico Algarve and Six Senses Douro Valley.

InterContinental Vilamoura – Algarve will join IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio, which currently includes more than 595 operating hotels and 392 properties in development worldwide.

Across Europe, the InterContinental brand currently operates 34 hotels, with several additional projects in the pipeline. The Vilamoura property will further strengthen the brand’s presence in key leisure destinations across the region.

The signing also coincides with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts’ 80th anniversary, as the brand continues to expand its global portfolio and introduce new properties in established and emerging travel destinations.
