SWISS Partners with Metafuels to Support Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development

SWISS Expands SAF Collaboration with Metafuels
Swiss International Air Lines has entered into a collaboration with Metafuels to support the development and scaling of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies.
The partnership seeks to enable the airline to obtain long-term access to synthetic aviation fuels, promote lower-emission air travel, and support Switzerland’s research and innovation sector.

SWISS and the Lufthansa Group are also evaluating long-term SAF procurement agreements as Switzerland and the European Union prepare to introduce synthetic fuel blending requirements from 2030 onwards.
Metafuels has developed a process that converts green methanol into sustainable aviation fuel. The technology can use biomethanol or e-methanol as feedstock and is designed to integrate with existing aviation infrastructure and aircraft fleets.
Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, said the partnership reflects the airline’s intention to support the development and commercialisation of synthetic fuels while contributing to aviation’s transition towards lower emissions.
Metafuels is currently developing a demonstration SAF production facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland. The company is also working on its first commercial SAF production plant in Rotterdam.
Saurabh Kapoor, CEO of Metafuels, said the agreement with SWISS and the Lufthansa Group highlights the growing role of synthetic SAF in aviation and supports efforts to scale fuel production in the coming years.
The airline said sustainable aviation fuel remains one of the key tools in reducing carbon emissions from flight operations alongside investments in fuel-efficient aircraft and operational improvements.
