Kansai International Airport Completes Terminal 1 Renovation with New Commercial Area
Kansai International Airport has officially opened a new international commercial area as part of the final phase of its Terminal 1 renovation project.
The opening on 2 June 2026 marks the completion of a major redevelopment programme that began in 2021 and was designed to improve passenger facilities and enhance the airport experience.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the launch, attended by Yoshiyuki Yamaya, Benoît Rulleau and airport partners.

New Commercial Area Adds Shopping and Dining Options
The newly opened space extends the central international departures area that first opened in December 2023.
The expansion introduces 24 new outlets featuring luxury brands, specialty retail stores and dining venues.
Airport officials said the new facilities are designed to provide travellers with a wider range of shopping and dining experiences before departure.
The commercial area also showcases regional products and local specialties, giving international passengers additional opportunities to explore Japanese offerings before leaving the country.
Terminal 1 Renovation Project Now Complete
With the opening of the new commercial zone, the Terminal 1 renovation programme has been fully completed.
According to airport officials, the central international area has expanded to approximately 1.6 times its size before the renovation project began.
The redevelopment was carried out over several phases and focused on modernising facilities while improving passenger flow and terminal capacity.
New Boarding System Improves Passenger Experience
As part of the final phase, Kansai International Airport has introduced a new “Call to Gate” system.
The initiative manages the timing of boarding gate announcements, allowing passengers to spend more time in the central departures area before proceeding to their departure gates.
Airport officials said the system is intended to create a more relaxed and comfortable pre-departure experience.

Airport Strengthens Role as Gateway to Kansai Region
The completion of the Terminal 1 redevelopment represents a significant milestone for the airport as it continues to serve as a major gateway to western Japan.
Kansai Airports stated that it will continue working with industry partners to develop new travel experiences and strengthen the airport’s role in supporting tourism and international connectivity across the Kansai region.
Passenger Facilities Expanded Through Long-Term Investment
The renovation programme reflects broader efforts to improve airport infrastructure and accommodate future passenger growth.
With expanded commercial facilities, enhanced passenger spaces and updated operational systems, Kansai International Airport aims to provide a more efficient and comfortable travel environment for international travellers.
