Jamaica’s Tourism Sector Activates Emergency Measures Ahead of Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica’s tourism industry is on alert as Hurricane Melissa approaches the island. The Ministry of Tourism, led by the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, is coordinating with tourism stakeholders to safeguard visitors, tourism workers, and local communities.

Minister Bartlett assured international partners and the global travel trade that Jamaica’s tourism sector is prepared to manage the evolving situation.

“Our ability to respond quickly and effectively to challenges reflects Jamaica’s focus on preparedness,” said Minister Bartlett.

“Readiness is essential to maintaining stability and supporting recovery.”

Over the past 24 hours, the Ministry has been in regular contact with the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), airline partners, and accommodation providers. These efforts are facilitating the orderly departure of guests ahead of possible weather disruptions. Airlines have also added extra flights and increased capacity to support departures.

The Ministry has activated the Tourism Emergency Operations Centre (TEOC), which is now operating around the clock as the central communication hub for the tourism sector. The TEOC is coordinating closely with the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, and Destination Managers across resort areas.

If weather conditions worsen, contingency plans jointly developed by the Ministry and the JHTA will establish temporary shelter facilities for visitors who may need to stay on the island during the storm.

Minister Bartlett noted that the coordinated response builds on Jamaica’s established disaster risk management framework.

“Through training and collaboration, our tourism stakeholders have developed clear procedures that prioritize safety and service continuity,” he said.

The Ministry and its agencies continue to monitor official updates and maintain communication with partners to ensure timely information sharing and coordinated action.

Minister Bartlett added, “This response demonstrates Jamaica’s ongoing commitment to the safety of visitors and the continued operation of its tourism industry.”
