Ethiopian Airlines Confirms Boeing 787 Order Expansion
Boeing 787 Order Supports Ethiopian Airlines Network Growth
Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed an order for six additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, converting previously agreed options into firm commitments. The aircraft are expected to support the airline’s plans to expand its long-haul network and increase cargo capacity from its hub in Addis Ababa.
The order, placed with Boeing, forms part of the airline’s broader fleet planning strategy. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be deployed on intercontinental routes, enabling the airline to serve destinations across Europe, Asia and North America, while also supporting connections within Africa.
Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, said the decision reflects the airline’s focus on fleet development and long-term operations. He noted that the addition of these aircraft will support network expansion and operational requirements.
Ethiopian Airlines already operates a fleet of Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft, which are used across both long-haul and regional routes. The aircraft type is known for its fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, allowing airlines to operate routes with a balance of passenger and cargo capacity.

According to Boeing, the 787 platform enables airlines to serve point-to-point routes while also supporting cargo demand through available belly capacity. This aligns with the airline’s approach to integrating passenger and cargo operations across its network.
The agreement reflects ongoing collaboration between the airline and Boeing, as Ethiopian Airlines continues to align its fleet with evolving travel demand and route development plans.
