Delta Marks 80 Years of Service in Miami with Community and Partner Event
Delta Air Lines marked an 80-year milestone on Dec. 10 with a gathering in Miami that brought together customers, community partners, local leaders and employees. The event reflected on Delta’s history in South Florida and outlined its plans for the years ahead.

Luciano Macagno, Delta’s Managing Director for Latin America, the Caribbean and South Florida, noted that Miami has been part of Delta’s operations for eight decades. He stated that the occasion acknowledged the airline’s longstanding presence while highlighting investments in expanded flight offerings, an enlarged Sky Club and strengthened partner connections.
Early Operations and Growth

Delta’s service in Miami began on Dec. 1, 1945, with a Douglas DC-3 christened with orange juice in recognition of the region’s citrus industry. The inaugural flight linked Miami and Chicago on what was then the longest domestic route awarded, known as the “Trunkline to Sunshine.”
Today, Delta operates 38 peak-day departures to 13 destinations, including all nine of its U.S. hubs. Through its Global Partner Network, the airline offers access to more than 1,000 destinations across more than 60 countries. Key partners include LATAM, Aeroméxico, Air France–KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Korean Air. These partnerships support coordinated schedules, shared benefits and consistent service standards for Miami travellers.
The airline highlighted developments in its Miami operations, including a 27 percent increase in capacity compared to 2023 and the addition of daily service to Seattle. It also showcased features of the Miami Delta Sky Club, which now covers 12,000 square feet and accommodates around 300 guests. The design takes inspiration from Miami’s Art Deco style and includes updated buffet and beverage areas, as well as power outlets throughout the space. Delta also mentioned improvements to its premium cabin offerings, such as menus by José Andrés, Missoni amenity kits, and Taittinger Champagne.
The airline has a longstanding involvement in community initiatives in South Florida. It supports organizations focused on education, the environment, equity and wellness, including Junior Achievement of Greater Miami and South Florida, the YMCA of South Florida, Clean Miami Beach, Miami Beach Pride, and coastline restoration efforts with MANG. Delta is included on Points of Light’s Civic 50 list, which recognises community-focused companies in the U.S.

Employees shared their perspectives on the airline’s role in the community. As the airline marks 80 years in Miami and approaches its 100th year of operations, it plans to continue investing in customer experience, sustainability, and global partnerships to support connectivity for travellers in South Florida.
