Sanctuary Amaidiyana opens in Auroville by CGH Earth

CGH Earth has announced the launch of Sanctuary Amaidiyana, a resort and spa located on the fringes of Auroville. The 23-key property focuses on holistic well-being, bringing together wellness, art, conscious cuisine, and cultural experiences designed to encourage a slower pace of travel and deeper engagement with the surroundings.

Named after the Tamil word for peace and tranquillity, Amaidiyana reflects the group’s approach to authenticity, community engagement, and environmental responsibility. Set within Auroville’s creative landscape, the retreat is designed as a space where guests can experience stillness in a natural setting.

Michael Dominic, CEO and Managing Director, CGH Earth, said the property reflects the brand’s philosophy of creating spaces shaped by local context. He noted that the retreat has been developed in alignment with Auroville’s ethos, with architecture, cuisine, and wellness experiences designed to connect with the land and local culture.

Amaidiyana retreat blends architecture, wellness and local craft

The property has been designed by Auroville-based architect Mona Doctor-Pingel, with a focus on contemporary design rooted in local materials and craftsmanship. Elements such as doors, metalwork, ceramics, and bas-reliefs have been created by local artisans, while hand-painted artworks by Auroville artists add distinct character to each room.

Two key wellness spaces at the retreat are Heiwa and the Watsu pool. Heiwa, conceptualised by Poppo Pingel, features a minimal design approach with a rock garden, plunge pool, and natural materials such as stone and teak.

The Watsu pool is maintained at a controlled temperature and is housed under a dome structure inspired by traditional building methods. Built using fired bricks and mud mortar, the space is designed to support water-based therapy focused on relaxation and movement.

George Joseph, Vice President – Operations, CGH Earth, said the retreat brings together multiple aspects of well-being, including accommodation, wellness therapies, and curated local experiences. These include e-bike trails, workshops in Auroville, and heritage walks in Puducherry.

The culinary programme follows CGH Earth’s Conscious Cuisine approach, with ingredients sourced from the on-site organic garden and local producers in Auroville. The menu features regional Tamil dishes, coastal seafood, and wellness-focused options, with an emphasis on seasonal, locally sourced produce.

Guests can also take part in activities such as craft workshops, yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda therapies, along with visits to nearby cultural and heritage sites.

With the launch of Sanctuary Amaidiyana, CGH Earth continues to expand its portfolio of properties centred on responsible tourism and local engagement, offering travellers an experience shaped by place, culture, and well-being.
