Bunkhouse Hotels Opens Hotel Daphne in Houston Heights

Hotel Daphne, the newest boutique property from Bunkhouse Hotels, is now open in Houston’s Heights neighbourhood. The 49-room hotel brings the brand’s design-focused, community-oriented approach to one of the city’s historic districts, featuring an Italian-style restaurant and bar, a library, a small private event space, a courtyard, and a retail shop that reflects the creative character of the area.

Following the recent opening of Hotel Saint Augustine in Houston’s Montrose neighbourhood, Hotel Daphne extends the brand’s presence into Houston Heights, a neighbourhood recognised for its mix of 19th-century homes, independent shops, and locally driven dining. Hotel Daphne is the first design-led boutique hotel of its kind within the Heights.

Named after Daphne from Greek mythology, the property draws inspiration from the story of transformation and autonomy. The laurel motif appears throughout the design, adding symbolic references to the hotel’s aesthetic direction. The name also carries a personal connection to the owners.

Developed in collaboration with Blanchard A+D, the five-story brick building incorporates elements that reference the architectural character of the Heights, including stepped parapets, steel sash windows, and white-painted brick, evoking the area’s industrial past. Landscape design by McDugald Steele integrates heritage oak trees, creating a transition between nearby residences and surrounding commercial spaces.

According to co-owner Ben Ackerley, the goal was to create a hotel that reflects the neighbourhood’s architectural and cultural identity while offering a comfortable environment for both visitors and local residents.

Designed by the in-house Bunkhouse Hotels team, the interiors draw on the Heights’ history as a planned utopian community and the myth of Daphne. Public spaces include handmade tilework, layered textiles, and a palette of warm neutrals with deeper tones. The lobby features a tiled front desk, a vintage Murano chandelier, modular seating, curated retail items, and artwork from the Ackerley family collection. A 350-square-foot library offers a quiet setting for reading or private gatherings.

Hypsi, the hotel’s all-day restaurant and lounge, is led by Chef Terrence Gallivan, a two-time James Beard Award nominee and former chef at Alto in New York. The menu offers Italian-style aperitivo dishes using Gulf Coast ingredients, including handmade pastas, shareable plates, and a Tableside Mozzarella Cart, accompanied by Italian wines, spritzes, and cocktails. The space features deep hues, vintage-inspired décor, a lava-stone bar, and an adjoining vine-covered courtyard. Hypsi is open for breakfast and dinner, with lunch service planned for January.

Each of the 49 rooms and suites is designed as a calm counterpart to the hotel’s common areas, featuring custom beds with upholstered headboards, mohair seating, and Arts and Crafts-style furniture. Select rooms have private terraces overlooking the courtyard. Additional amenities include dog-friendly options, room service, and concierge support.

Hotel Daphne marks an expanded footprint for Bunkhouse Hotels in Texas, where the company now operates several properties. Along with Hotel Saint Augustine and the recently opened Jo’s Coffee location in Houston Heights, Hotel Daphne reflects the brand’s focus on community-driven hospitality rooted in local culture. The hotel is located near the 19th Street shopping district.

Starting room rates begin at $359 per night.
