British Airways Plans Winter 2026 Expansion with New Destinations
Airline Adds Melbourne and Colombo, Increases Long-Haul Frequencies
British Airways has announced its winter 2026 schedule, including the addition of two new destinations, Melbourne, Australia, and Colombo, Sri Lanka, as well as increased frequencies on several existing long-haul routes.
The planned changes represent a 9% increase in the airline’s long-haul network, reflecting its focus on expanding route options and aligning capacity with travel demand.
Flights to Melbourne will begin from 9 January 2027, operating daily from London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur. The route is timed to coincide with major events such as the Australian Open and the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Colombo will be introduced earlier, with services from London Gatwick starting on 23 October 2026. The route will operate three times a week during the winter season, providing direct access to Sri Lanka.

In addition to new routes, British Airways will increase frequencies across several destinations. These include Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda, Barbados, Kingston, and San José. The airline is also expanding services to destinations in the United States and the Caribbean, while maintaining three daily flights to Delhi.
The winter schedule also includes the return of services to Abu Dhabi, operating daily from 25 October.
Alongside its planned expansion, British Airways has introduced additional short-term capacity on routes such as Bangkok and Singapore in response to changing travel patterns. The airline added extra services in March and continues to adjust its schedule in line with demand.
At the same time, certain routes in the Middle East remain suspended for a limited period, with flights to destinations including Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, Doha, and Tel Aviv temporarily reduced or paused.
Travel demand has remained steady, with increased interest in destinations across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and Canary Islands. The airline has reported higher search activity for locations such as Antigua, Barbados, the Maldives, and Gran Canaria.

Neil Chernoff, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer at British Airways, said the winter 2026 schedule reflects the airline’s ongoing efforts to expand its network and provide more travel options, while continuing to adjust capacity based on demand trends.
