Anantara Ubud Bali Resort Launches Bali Starling Conservation Programme

Anantara Ubud Bali Resort has launched Where Harmony Takes Flight, a conservation project supporting the release of the endangered Bali Starling into the forests of Payangan, where the resort is situated. Guests were recently invited to witness the first release as part of a programme designed to showcase Bali’s ecological and cultural heritage.

The Bali Starling, also known as Jalak Bali, is a native species of the island and is recognised as an important part of Bali’s natural environment. The programme forms part of the resort’s efforts to support responsible tourism, cultural awareness and environmental conservation while offering guests opportunities to engage with local traditions and nature.

The initiative was developed by Made Warnata, Director of Spa, Wellness and Recreation at Anantara Ubud Bali Resort. Drawing on his connection to Balinese culture and nature-based wellness, Warnata worked with conservation organisations including Yayasan KEHATI, an Indonesian foundation focused on biodiversity protection, and Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA), the government body responsible for wildlife and ecosystem conservation.

The resort currently cares for two pairs of Bali Starlings under the supervision of conservation specialists. Another pair is scheduled for release on 22 April to coincide with Earth Day, supporting the species’ gradual return to its natural habitat. Since these birds tend to form lifelong pairs, conservationists stress the importance of responsible breeding and meticulously planned release programs to aid in the species’ recovery.

“The Bali Starling represents Bali’s natural environment and highlights the importance of protecting it,” said Made Warnata.

“This programme reflects a collaborative approach to conservation carried out with respect for nature and in partnership with local communities and conservation authorities.”

Where Harmony Takes Flight is part of Anantara’s global sustainability programme, Dollar for Deeds, which enables guests to contribute to environmental and community initiatives across the brand’s hotels and resorts worldwide.
