American Airlines Prepares for Winter Holiday Travel Season
American Airlines is preparing to welcome more than 12 million customers during the winter holiday travel period, operating over 119,000 flights. The expanded schedule offers customers more travel options than last year.

David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer at American Airlines, said the airline’s workforce of over 130,000 employees is focused on delivering safe and reliable journeys throughout the holiday season. He added that the airline is coordinating closely with federal partners, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to ensure smooth operations during the peak travel period.
American said its operations are prepared for winter weather, with teams having planned deicing procedures at cold-weather hubs such as Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport. Aircraft and facilities across the network have also been winterised to support both customers and staff.
Customer-focused initiatives
The airline continues to roll out TSA Touchless ID across several hubs and gateways, including New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, Washington Reagan, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and additional terminals at Dallas Fort Worth, to reduce time spent at security checkpoints.
American’s connection-saving technology, introduced earlier this year, is now active at seven hubs: Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Charlotte, Miami, Chicago O’Hare, Philadelphia and Phoenix. The system is designed to help customers make onward connections during disruptions.
Fleet updates during the holiday period include the introduction of the Airbus A321XLR on December 18, alongside the airline’s Boeing 787-9. American also noted the continued expansion of its satellite-equipped Wi-Fi fleet.
Onboard and lounge updates include new partnerships with Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza coffee, as well as the opening of new Flagship and Admirals Club lounges at Philadelphia. Additional lounges are planned at Charlotte and Miami, including the introduction of the Provisions by Admirals ClubSM concept at Charlotte.
American has also introduced updates to prepaid baggage options, including flexible refunds, expanded self-service features, the use of Trip Credits for baggage purchases and integration with same-day flight changes.

Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, said the airline remains focused on supporting customers as they travel to connect with friends and family during the holiday season.
