American Airlines Commemorates 70 Years at Chicago O’Hare
American Airlines marked 70 years since the first passenger flight departed from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) — a milestone in the city’s aviation history. On October 29, 1955, Trans World Airlines (TWA), later acquired by American, operated the first passenger flight from O’Hare to Paris, officially opening the airport for commercial service.

To celebrate the anniversary, American joined the City of Chicago for a commemorative event that included a reenactment flight using a Boeing 737-800 with the TWA heritage livery, along with a gate celebration and water cannon salute.
Over the past seven decades, American has expanded its operations at O’Hare, now serving as the airline’s third-largest hub with connections to over 160 destinations. The airline continues to invest in the city and its airport infrastructure, strengthening its role in Chicago’s aviation landscape.
As American approaches its centennial, the milestone highlights its long-standing connection with Chicago and its continued focus on serving travelers across the Midwest and beyond.
