InterGlobe Foundation, the philanthropic arm of InterGlobe Enterprises, and IndiGoReach, the CSR arm of IndiGo, teamed up with Sahapedia to organize an enriching Heritage Walk as part of the ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign. This specially designed walk took place in Kozhikode, Kerala, and illuminated the Zamorin era's rich history and cultural heritage.
The ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign raises awareness about India's heritage and culture, encouraging discussions and collaboration to safeguard tangible and intangible heritage. It catalyzes local citizens to deepen their understanding of the vibrant history and culture surrounding them. Similar heritage walks have occurred in Prayagraj, Bhubaneswar, Shillong, Nashik, and Hyderabad.
The themed walk, "Zamorin's Trail: Exploring Kozhikode’s Glorious Heritage," gave participants a distinctive chance to engage with the city. It began in the morning at the Tali Shiva Temple and concluded at the 1980’s restaurant, traversing important heritage landmarks such as Palayam, SM Street (Mittai Theruvu), historic mosques in Kuttichira, Gujarati Street, Big Bazaar Market, and more. This journey distinctly showcased the city's rich legacy of cosmopolitanism, religious harmony, governance, literature, and scholarship. Led by Sruthin Lal, a culture and heritage practitioner, the walk attracted local community members, government officials, media representatives, and senior leaders from IndiGo and InterGlobe Foundation.
On the occasion, Rohini Bhatia, Chairperson of the InterGlobe Foundation, expressed, “We are excited to highlight the naturally beautiful and culturally rich city of Kozhikode through the 'My City My Heritage' campaign. Building upon our previous Heritage Walks, this initiative strengthens our dedication to preserving and promoting India's built and natural heritage. Kozhikode’s lasting cultural significance, shaped by centuries of history and various influences, offers an intriguing glimpse into India's rich heritage, and we are pleased to share this experience with the community.”
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, remarked, "Kozhikode, a notable tourist destination, is marked by its rich cultural heritage. This sixth Heritage Walk emphasizes IndiGo's dedication to celebrating and preserving the historical legacy of the Zamorin era. IndiGo's extensive network connects Kozhikode with 6 domestic and 4 international destinations, enhancing global access to this culturally significant area. As India's leading airline, we are committed to promoting tourism and showcasing Kozhikode's unique history, reinforcing our dedication to responsible corporate citizenship and community engagement by connecting people, places, and culture.”
InterGlobe Foundation and Sahapedia launched the ‘My City My Heritage’ project in 2019, focusing on reviving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Indian cities. This initiative goes beyond traditional preservation by actively engaging local communities to explore, document, and share the diverse heritage assets that shape urban identities. Initially covering ten cities across India, the program has expanded to delve into the rich heritage of Srinagar, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) to create an immersive experience for a broad audience.
InterGlobe Foundation and IndiGoReach have initiated various projects to promote heritage conservation in India. Notable projects of InterGlobe Foundation include the conservation and cultural revival of the mausoleum of Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan in Delhi, cultural mapping and documentation of ten cities, restoration of the ‘Indra Kund’ stepwell in Delwara, tile restoration of Qutb Shah’s Mausoleum, and Heritage Fellowships. IndiGoReach has also conducted projects to conserve Qutb Shah’s Mausoleum at the Qutb Shahi Heritage Park in Hyderabad and renovate the interiors of the Lal Bagh Palace in Indore.
