Air India Basic Fare Introduced for Domestic Travel
Air India Basic Fare Adds New Economy Option for Passengers
Air India has introduced its new Air India Basic Fare on select domestic routes, offering passengers an additional economy-class booking option focused on lower fares and greater flexibility.
The new fare category expands Air India’s existing fare structure, which currently includes Value, Classic and Flex options. The Basic Fare is being introduced on a trial basis and is aimed at travellers seeking a more simplified travel product.
Available exclusively in Economy Class, the fare includes a checked baggage allowance of 15 kg and a cabin baggage allowance of 7 kg. Passengers will also receive complimentary tea or coffee during their journey. However, complimentary meals are not included in the fare.
Air India said the new fare is optional and will operate alongside its existing fare families, allowing travellers to select a product that best suits their travel needs and budget.
Additional Meal Options Available
Passengers travelling on the Basic Fare can pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure. Meal choices include vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and diabetic options.
The airline stated that if passengers are moved to another flight due to schedule changes, any pre-booked meals will automatically transfer to the new flight. Where meal availability is not possible, a refund will be provided.
Pilot Programme on Domestic Routes
The Basic Fare is currently available on selected domestic routes as part of a pilot programme. Air India will review customer feedback and booking trends before making decisions regarding a wider rollout.
At present, the fare can only be booked through Air India’s direct sales channels, including the airline’s website, mobile application, contact centre and airport ticketing offices.
The introduction of the Basic Fare reflects the growing trend among airlines to offer a wider range of fare options, allowing passengers to choose between bundled services and lower-cost travel products based on their individual preferences.
With this addition, the airline now offers four fare categories across its domestic network: Basic, Value, Classic and Flex.
