HKIA Passenger Traffic and Cargo Volume Continue to Increase in 2026

Hong Kong International Airport reported continued growth in passenger traffic, cargo operations and flight movements during April 2026.

According to the latest airport figures, HKIA handled 5.67 million passengers during the month, representing a 9.4% increase compared to April last year.

Flight movements also increased by 5.5% year-on-year to reach 34,445 operations, while cargo throughput rose 4.9% to 423,000 tonnes.

Easter Holiday Supported Passenger Growth

Airport officials stated that passenger traffic growth during April was supported by the Easter holiday travel period.

Daily passenger traffic peaked on 3 April with more than 210,000 passengers travelling through the airport.

Transfer and transit passengers continued to contribute the most to passenger growth, followed by visitor traffic.

By region, the strongest growth was recorded from the Chinese Mainland and Southeast Asia markets.

The Middle East was the only region to record declining passenger traffic during the month due to ongoing regional conflicts.

Cargo Performance Driven by Transshipment

Cargo growth at HKIA was mainly supported by increased transshipment activity and imports.

Transshipment cargo recorded a year-on-year increase of 20.2% while imports rose by 6.5%.

Export declines also narrowed significantly to 0.3% compared to the previous year.

By market, cargo traffic growth from Europe and Southeast Asia helped offset weaker performance from North America and Middle Eastern markets.

Passenger and Cargo Traffic Increased in First Four Months

From January to April 2026, HKIA handled 22.3 million passengers, representing a 13% increase compared to the same period last year.

Flight movements during the first four months rose by 5.1% to 135,090 operations.

Cargo throughput during the same period increased by 3.7% to reach 1.63 million tonnes.

Annual Traffic Figures Also Improved

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 63.54 million passengers and 401,240 flight movements.

These figures represented year-on-year increases of 13.7% for passenger traffic and 6.6% for aircraft operations.

Annual cargo throughput also increased by 2.9% to 5.12 million tonnes.

HKIA Receives Environmental Recognition

HKIA also received the Platinum Award at the Airports Council International Green Airports Recognition 2026 programme.

The airport’s “HKIA Flood Resilience Studies” project won the award in the category for airports handling more than 40 million passengers annually.

Julian Lee said the recognition reflects the airport’s focus on climate resilience and climate risk management as Hong Kong faces increasing weather-related challenges.

Award Focused on Climate Change Adaptation

The Green Airports Recognition programme is organised by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East.

This year’s award theme focused on climate change adaptation and recognised airports implementing environmental and resilience measures to address climate-related risks.
