Fraport Records Higher Passenger Traffic at Frankfurt Airport
Fraport reported positive passenger growth across its airport network in May 2026, with Frankfurt Airport returning to growth and handling 5.7 million passengers during the month.
Passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport increased by 2.7 percent year-on-year, supported by holiday travel demand and school vacation periods across Europe.
The airport operator also reported that total passenger traffic across all airports actively managed by Fraport reached 17.1 million passengers in May, representing an increase of 1.9 percent compared to the same month last year.
Frankfurt Airport Benefits from Leisure and Long-Haul Demand
Fraport said Southern European destinations recorded particularly strong demand during the month.
Long-haul routes also contributed to growth, with increased passenger traffic to destinations in:
- Far East Asia
- Africa
- Latin America
The growth helped Frankfurt Airport return to a positive passenger trend despite softer performance in some operational indicators.
Cargo and Aircraft Movements Decline
While passenger traffic increased, cargo volumes recorded a slight decline.
Frankfurt Airport handled 176,725 metric tonnes of cargo in May, down 1.3 percent year-on-year.
Aircraft movements also decreased by 2.1 percent to 41,377 take-offs and landings.
Total maximum take-off weights reached approximately 2.5 million metric tonnes, representing a 1.9 percent decline compared to May 2025.
Strong Growth Across Several International Airports
Many airports within Fraport’s international portfolio reported passenger growth during May.
Ljubljana Airport welcomed 168,820 passengers, an increase of 11.2 percent.
Fraport’s Brazilian airports, Fortaleza Airport and Porto Alegre Airport, handled a combined 1.2 million passengers, up 5.7 percent.
Jorge Chávez International Airport recorded 2.2 million passengers, representing growth of 1.3 percent.
Greek Airports Continue Strong Performance
Fraport’s network of 14 Greek regional airports maintained strong momentum.
The airports welcomed a combined 4.0 million passengers during May, an increase of 6.0 percent compared to the previous year.
In Bulgaria, Burgas Airport and Varna Airport handled 252,375 passengers, posting growth of 13.3 percent.
Antalya Records Passenger Decline
Not all airports within the network recorded growth.
Antalya Airport welcomed 3.7 million passengers in May, representing a decline of 5.0 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
Despite the decrease, Antalya remained one of the busiest airports in Fraport’s international portfolio.
Global Network Continues to Expand Traffic
Overall, Fraport’s May traffic figures reflect continued demand for air travel across Europe and international markets.
Passenger growth at Frankfurt Airport and across several international locations helped offset weaker results at some airports, supporting positive overall performance for the group’s global airport network.
