Delta Orders 31 Additional Airbus Widebody Aircraft to Support International Growth

Delta Air Lines has announced plans to add 31 additional next-generation Airbus widebody aircraft to its fleet. The order includes a new incremental purchase, the exercise of 10 previously secured options, and 20 additional future widebody options. The investment supports Delta’s international network expansion and ongoing fleet renewal plans.

Commenting on the announcement, Ed Bastian, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Air Lines, said the additional aircraft will support the airline’s expanding long-haul operations and enhance its premium product offerings. He also highlighted Delta’s long-standing partnership with Airbus and the long-term operational and cost benefits of the widebody fleet.

Delta’s fleet renewal strategy is aligned with its focus on international and premium travel growth over the coming decade. The new widebody aircraft will increase premium seating capacity on medium- and long-haul routes while delivering improved fuel efficiency and supporting margin performance.

Robin Hayes, Chairman and CEO of Airbus in North America, said Airbus values Delta’s continued confidence in its widebody aircraft, noting that the A330neo and A350 families offer flexibility and performance for global network expansion.

Following the latest commitments, Delta’s Airbus A330-900 fleet will grow to 55 aircraft, while its A350 fleet will reach 79 aircraft. This total includes 20 A350-1000 aircraft, which Delta expects to begin receiving in early 2027.

The A350’s range and performance capabilities support Delta’s expansion in long-haul markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the South Pacific. The aircraft is currently deployed or planned for routes including Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong, and Riyadh.

The A330-900 aircraft will be powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engine, while the A350-900 will use the Trent XWB-84 EP engine. Delta has also entered into long-term maintenance agreements with Rolls-Royce to support these engines across its widebody fleet.

All new widebody aircraft joining Delta’s fleet in the coming years will feature expanded premium cabins, including Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Delta Main. The aircraft will also offer seatback in-flight entertainment, onboard Wi-Fi, and enhanced food and beverage options.

The order remains within Delta’s previously stated capital expenditure and capacity targets. With this announcement, Delta now has 232 narrowbody and 85 widebody aircraft on order, with deliveries expected in the coming years.
