Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan Opens Riverside Hotel in Pudong

The opening of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan marks a new chapter for the brand in China, reflecting its heritage while aligning with Shanghai’s contemporary character. Located along the Huangpu River in Pudong’s Qiantan District, the hotel combines international design with local architectural influences.

Waterfront Design Approach

The building’s exterior, shaped with smooth lines and curved forms, was developed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). The design takes inspiration from a streamlined hull, with custom metal panels and glass surfaces that mirror surrounding greenery and nearby river views. At night, the structure is softly illuminated, creating a visible presence along the waterfront.

Interiors by Cheng Chung Design (CCD) feature a light palette with accents of green, terracotta, and amber. Materials such as marble, wood, and metal are used throughout guest areas. Art Deco elements are reinterpreted through geometric patterns and subtle detailing.

Dining Spaces

Dining venues ARAME and Fu Cheng introduce residential-style layouts and understated lighting concepts designed by CAP Atelier and Tino Kwan. The spaces are arranged to support both private and social dining occasions.

Design Motifs: Sail and Peacock

Two recurring themes guide the interiors:

The Sail

Curved lines continue from the exterior into the lobby and guest corridors. Gold panels against light wood surfaces appear in public spaces, reflecting the hotel’s riverfront location. Sculptural forms and arched details carry the visual connection to water throughout the property.

The Peacock

Referencing Peacock Alley, a signature element of Waldorf Astoria properties, the motif is interpreted through layered patterns and textured finishes. The staircase leading to the ballroom is circular, while Peacock Alley features embroidered chair backs and a mural in the VIP room.

Public Spaces and Guest Rooms

The lobby includes a glass atrium housing a central clock, a feature that has been present across Waldorf Astoria hotels since 1893. The space functions as a meeting point and visual anchor.

The hotel offers 204 guest rooms and suites, many with balconies that overlook the Huangpu River and the West Bund area. Room layouts emphasize access to natural light and views, providing a connection between the city and the surrounding landscape. The location in Qiantan supports a slower pace within an urban setting.
